The curse of the NWA World Traveler cover
Plenty has already been blogged about this but we feel it important to throw our interweb voice in the mix: THIS CARMELO ANTHONY SHIT IS GETTING OUT OF EFFING HAND!!! The latest sorrow of young Melo is NWA pulling all copies of their December in-flight magazine featuring Anthony on the cover. NWA said they don’t “want to appear to condone in any way the behavior of some of the players during Saturday’s game, including Mr. Anthony, by continuing to offer the current edition of WorldTraveler.” Overreact much? We think so.
Take a lesson from the “Kings of Athletes on the Covers of Magazines,” Sports Illustrated. SI was content to feature Atest on their cover less than a year after the ugliest brawl in league history. They threw Pete Rose on the cover the spring after grappling with Bud Harrelson during the 1973 NLCS. They were even the cause for this criminally obscene cover. Everyone is afraid of offending everyone else now (especially when the object of offense is young, black and fabulous) but going overboard can be even more offensive.
NWA, Melo was just following the advice of a past NWA World Traveler cover boy, Terry Bradshaw: You’ve got to stand up and do your own battles. My daddy taught me that a long time ago, that you fight your own battles. The only way to shut everybody up is to win.
Win one for the Bradshaw, Melo. Denver is America’s Team.
